Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4
I was and have been for years using your product for email and newsfeeds.
with this latest version - it deleted or disabled user_name and passwords
for the news site I pay for to get netnews.
The gui pops up asking for password. On some occasions when I press cancel
I get user name I enter it with save to password file - and then enter the
password and save to password file - but then it is rejected.
My password file is smaller now so it seems.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.select news60forteinc.com in reader - in order to unfold the newsgroups.
2.GUI pops up and no longer allows access - even with the username and passord.
3.
Actual Results:
Now password is required when selecting news group.
when given - it is never given. Are you sending it to forteinc ? or consolidated ?
Expected Results:
username and password be saved for the news server. Another username and passord
for the email server.
I'm paying for service and now can't get access for which I paid.
Loss of product.

Ners Server NNTP is server type
Server name : news60forteninc.com Port 119 Default 119
Connection security None
In manage Identities I have my APN user name - but it doesn't seem
to stick as the other username is used for everything else.
My ISP killed news feeds under threats. Instead of killing the threads,
thy killed everything. So I had to go out and buy from another service.
I got a new password today but I continue get errors and blockage.
Popup says "Please enter a username for news server
Then password. Read one or two and then :
A news NNTP error occurred: Authentication failed (Press OK )
and it just happened once again.
Once I get that - and why I ever get asked in the first place....
I am blocked as it asks only for password.
I double click and it goes into a new tab window for that message, but
it is blank and demands password. When given - it fails.
Close that tab.
do an N for next read - e.g. advance down the list and up pops
the News Server Password Required (in the same feed)
enter that - the one I got today!!! - it was reset to a new one -
by apn-support-inquiry@forteinc.com Agent member Tom Gold.
I asked them for help if they knew.
After I entered the password a few lines before, Nothing is displayed.
press n to go down a couple of lines - after typing these lines -
and "A news NNTP error occured: Authentication failed.
I pay for teh service and since getting this new tool I have had fits and
starts. I also lost all of my saved email from a previous account.
Deleting messages without asking - is wrong. I had documents there.
So there are known bugs in this new tool - driving us crazy.

I logged into their site into my account (change things).
But this one you might be able to get in with :

I use the premium news APN service on the right....
I'm into metallurgy, roses, woodturning, and so forth.

Saved username and password can be checked by Password Manager.
Tools/Options/Security/Passwords, Saved Password
What entry with what username, password is saved for the news server?
Regression of bug 286628?
When did your problem start to occur?
In other bugs for IMAP, login atempt with null or old password before new password prompt was seen. It caused lock-out of IMAP account.
- login attempt with wrong password occurred on each IMAP folder,
and number of IMAP folders was large,
and "check on start up" was set for many IMAP folders.
- So, failed login count easily exceeded max wrong login count.
Do you subscribe many newsgroups of the news server?
Do you enable "check for new message on startup" option?
What happens if you remove password manager entry for the news server, disable "check for new message on startup" and "check every ...", restart Tb, and request unlock of your account by provider?

For "different from email" part of bug summary:
> news group needs it's own user name and password different from email.
As seen in password manager entry, entity of username/password of news account is different from one for email account since initial, even though same mail address is set at account setting of POP3/IMAP account and news account. The mail address which is set in account settings is implemented as "Identity", and different identity is defined for mail account and news account. Look into prefs.js file, please.
as I understand the NNTP implementation if you put your username@NNTP server name as the server it will use the correct username and the saved password for this account.

This bug is back - Just since 7.0.1 was installed - you used the same username
for two isp accounts - imap mail and nnp news feed from the same site as before.
The news isp requires a news_username and a news_password. The current software
supports or configures into a username and news_password when asked. Concerting my previous version to the new (7.0.1) missed the fine point and might have a program bug in the conversion or update file. It might be in the "write to disk upon exit" function - that saves the data and didn't handle two usernames.
Please re-open this as a year later from the last close it raises it's ugly head again.

After further thought - the bug is in the save to disk function / routine.
Since after installing the new 7.0.1 one had to have all versions shut down
and then the new one would configure and load. It worked. I suspect a shutdown
for a MS bug fix causing a reboot - caused the current overwrite of my database
making the news feed username - not unique from the email username. This is fine
when the mail ISP supplies the news feed - mine won't now. SO I went third party.
Again - in the write program/function/routine is the bug. As the program exits
it saves to the config files changes. It put one username (by symbol) into all.

The constant popup for each news group feed getting updates. I don't see how I can change anything - but your saving program must be looked at - seems the unit test goes there. Former unit tester of hardware and software for pure engineering.
The same miss-function occured in version 3+ as it does in 7.0.1 and I suppose ok in 7.0.

What does the popup say ?

The popup demands a password for any news group - I enter the correct one -
have them written down - from the email from the server - and it doesn't work.
I looked at the help file"trouble shooting" - showing the configuration of my accounts. Account1 - imap mail.consolidated.net:143 authentication method : Normal Password and that is the same for account2 - (none) Local Folders and account3 (nntp) news60.forteinc.com:119 "Normal password".
What I see is in the "Mail and NEws Accounts" NAME - are the imap, none, and nntp.
I don't see a space for USERNAME for each account. And "Normal password" is
used for all three accounts.
The popup:
"Please enter a password for news server access:
In the title - "News Server Password Required"

What I have discovered is there are missing elements - lines of code -
in the "signon.sqlite" file.
The current one has nothing for my news server.
An old one has several lines for my news server.
Since I was able to install and read - but once exited and reloaded,
there was lost data - it points to a routine or function that points to
signon.sqlite upon exit. That doesn't save like it used to.
Hope this helps debug. A simple news feed account for debug is about $3.00 USD
a year. Cheap tool to debug.
Let me know if I can be of any more help - I can mail / attach the old and new files if wanted. I fear they contain private information and that makes me weary.

I object downgrading this to 'normal' - YOU software engineers that disable
our evenings - kill our relationships that have been there for years.
Pass false usernames to third party vendors and then I enter a password.
I've been using usenet for many many years - since dialup.
This isn't a normal thing to occur. e.g. - take your TV, or your MP3/4 player
or your computer away and call that normal. Username and passwords are security
issues and are serious and important. I get popups on my screen for every
news group - and this occurs on a constant basis.
Crash Signature: Loss of access to paid service. demands
passwords for the news group after you issue
my email username. The third party service
provides username_theirs and password_theirs
which was working prior to this release!

If this is going to take months or weeks - please point me to 7.0 so I might be
able to recover once I make amends to my newsfeed vendor that you have been giving
false and private usernames and passwords. They use computer generated username
and computer generated password. So they have to be different.
Your single username works only for an ISP that continues to have newsfeeds after
RIA tried to shut down ISP operations around the country.

Popup after I put in my correct password to the news server -
"A News (NNTP) error occurred: Authentication failed - Incorrect username/password"
There is no place I can find in the new version of Thunderbird to have a second
username or username2 as it were maybe - for a news service or other services.
You are sending my username/password of my email account to the third party news
server - thus creating a security issue. You might be cause of a security breach
or identity theft. Your new software in this last version - was working 7.0 but not
7.0.1 - uses only 1 username and passwords. It uses them over and over into three
different sets. And how am I going to be repaid for the loss of service that I paid for. Simple paying for the service isn't enough.
If you need a test case - go to my news server company - see above - request a nominal data account - and get your new username and password - both computer generated. Martin
