User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4 I can reproduce this by creating a folder "aa" in "Local Folders", then deleting it (by right-click or dragging). After "Empty Deleted" (right-click on "Deleted" folder) the "Deleted" folder is still showing the expand arrow and the deleted folder "aa" is still visible. However, selecting the folder produces a busy cursor, although TB doesn't hang and I can close it as normal. The "aa" folder disappears if I close TB and re-open, and all is well. The folder "aa" really has gone as I can delete another folder of the same name with no "already exists" error (but which then performs the same non-disappearing feat). It makes no difference whether "aa" is empty or not. The support forum suggests renaming panacea.dat, which I have tried to no avail. Several people have had a very similar problem but not in this precise detail (search with "deleted folder"). It seems to have been cropping up periodically for years. It's not a problem, just a niggle, but you ask to know about even little things so here you are... Have fun, Duncan Clee Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create a folder in Local Folder 2. Delete it, then Empty Deleted 3. The folder is still visible in Deleted (not in Local Folders) but can't be selected - you get a busy cursor but TB doesn't hang and can be closed. 4. Restart TB and the deleted folder is no longer visible. An identically named folder can now be created and deleted without "Already Exists" error, although the error described here still persists. Actual Results: The deleted folder is still visible but can't be selected. It disappears on restarting TB. Expected Results: The deleted folder should have disappeared with the rest of the messages on "Empty Deleted". STOP PRESS: it seems that this only happens if there are no other messages in Deleted. If you "Empty Deleted" when there is a message and a folder, the message goes but not the folder. The folder can be selected and is still there after a restart. Now "Empty Deleted" again and you are back in the territory described above.
> Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.9) > Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4 > After "Empty Deleted" (right-click on "Deleted" folder) What folder do you mean by "Deleted" folder? Folder which is selected at Server Setting for IMAP account/"Move it to this folder"? Is your GB build's translation of "Trash" for folder name/menue items "Deleted"? Do you use special Tb build? Or you use add-on for different name from "Trash" or multiple trash folders? When(with which build, from secific day, after you install an add-on, ...) did your problem start to occur? Can you reproduce your proble with Tb's safe mode(thunderbir.exe -safe-mode)? Tb's mail folder consists of files of <folder_name>, <folder_name.msf>, and directory of <folder_name.sbd> for subfolder's files. They are held in directory specified at Server Seting/"Local Directory:". Check files/directory before/after each step of your steps to reproduce problem. Is funny files or something wrong seen on files/direcory? When you see 'aa still remains in the "Deleted" folder after "Empty Deleted"', what happens by next operation? aa still remains at newly opened Tb's window? - At account's context menu, "Open". Do you use folder pane view of "Smart Folders"? If so, does your problem occur with "All Folders" view?
1. By "Deleted" folder I mean "Trash". It's called "Deleted on my build, don't ask me why, I have no idea, it just installed itself like that. :) 2. You asked a good question about "Smart Folders". No, the problem doesn't occur in "All Folders"! Then, when I go back to "Smart Folders" and try to reproduce the problem it doesn't happen quite as before. Emptying Trash/Deleted has no effect, clicking on the supposedly deleted folder doesn't produce the busy cursor, but I can delete the folder from within Trash by right-clicking and selecting Delete. It disappears as you would expect and is definitely gone as I can delete a new subfolder of the same name. However, once I've done this it seems to "reset" things back to how they were - i.e. the problem I originally reported. Odd but that's what's happening. And just to confirm - when the error is occuring as first reported, after restarting TB the deleted folder is gone, just like it should have in the first place (all viewing done under "Smart Folders"). 3. Add-ons. I have no extensions installed. Plugins: Acrobat 9.3.2.163, Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.170.4, Java Platform SE 6 U20 6.0.200.2, McAfee Virtual Technician 5.5.1147.0 (Gecko Version 1.8b1), NPCIG.dll 1.0.0.5 Canon Image Gateway (came with Canon Camera), QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6.0, Shockwave Flash 10.0.45.2, Silverlight Plug-in 4.0.50524.0, Windows Live Photo Gallery 14.0.8081.709 4. Account settings. Global Inbox (Local Folders). In "Account Settings", "Local directory" is set to a subfolder of User\...\Documents (i.e. what is called "My Documents" on XP), rather than left within the "Profiles" folder created at install. 5. When did the problem start? No idea! I noticed it last week but it could have been happening for longer. This is a new machine running Windows 7 64-bit and TB was installed only 2 months ago. I never noticed the problem on my old XP SP3 machine but I was viewing under "All Folders" back then (there is no "Smart Folders" option I can see on this version - v. 2.0.0.24 (20120228). 6. Files/folders. Not quite sure what you're looking for so here's what I see happening when monitoring Profile folder and Local Folders (sorted by Date Modified): i) On launching TB the files parent.lock and pluginreg.dat are created/modified in my profile folder (i.e. they appear at the top of the list). ii) On creating subfolder "aa" within "Local Folders", the files "aa" and "aa.msf" appear in "Local Folders" folder on hdd. iii) On deleting "aa", cookies.sqlite-journal, global-messages-db.sqlite, panacea.dat are created/modified in my profile folder. Trash.msf is modified and the two "aa" files are gone. iv) On "Empty Deleted/Trash" global-messages-db.sqlite is again modified, as are "Trash" and "Trash.msf". The deleted folder "aa" is still visible and clicking on it produces a busy cursor. No files are modified. In spite of the busy cursor, TB has not hung. I can right-click on "aa" and select the delete option, although nothing happens (I didn't try this before as it didn't occur to me). v) On closing TB, "Trash.msf" is modified but not "Trash". Several files in the profile folder change: cert8.db, folderTree.json, key3.db, panacea.dat, prefs.js, session.json, virtualFolders.dat. vi) On re-opening TB, parent.lock and pluginreg.dat are again modified. A few seconds later, as I sit and do nothing, global-messages-db.sqlite is again modified. The "aa" folder is now gone from "Deleted/Trash". Hope that helps. That's all I can do for now as my stomach is rumbling, so it's dinner time...
(In reply to comment #2) > 1. By "Deleted" folder I mean "Trash". It's called "Deleted on my build, > don't ask me why, I have no idea, it just installed itself like that. :) I thought translation of "Trash" of Gb build is "Bin", because Gmail's translation of "Trash" by "Display Language: English(UK)" is "Bin". > 2. You asked a good question about "Smart Folders". > No, the problem doesn't occur in "All Folders"! If so, phenomenon you saw is "Smart Folders" related one. Please search for already opened(or closed as DUPLICATED or FIXED) bug reports at B.M.O for similar phenomenon to yours via "Advanced Search" at B.M.O, before open new bug for phenomenon you saw.
Done what I can on that search and nothing came up I could see. What happens now? Do I really need to open a new bug?
AFAIR, "Empty Trash" of "Smart Folder"(internally Virtual Folder/Saved Search Folder, see properties of Trash at "Smart Folders" view) doesn't work and bug for it exists. Search bugs of such terms in bug summary, please.

Sorry, WADA, but I'm just a user trying to be helpful and haven't the time or inclination to keep pursuing this. If I'd known what I was getting myself into I wouldn't have bothered reporting it. And, sorry, please don't take this personally, but your sentences are very hard to understand. Signing off... Duncan

Also, deleted folders remain in the folder pane until Thunderbird is restarted - on Linux Mint 18.1 x64, with Thunderbird 52.1.1. Shoddy.
