When reading an e-mail I receive with HTML linking to remote graphic content, Thunderbird displays a warning:

"To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message."

Below that is a HYPERLINKED message which states:

"Always load remote content from abc@xyz.com" (where abc@xyz.com is the sender)

The problem is that when I click on the link, most often nothing happens except I see a brief "Load Message..." text flash in the lower left status bar of the Thunderbird window.

When this happens, the only way I can see the remote content is to use the BUTTON on the upper right which says "Show Remote Content," but this only works for that one message, not all from abc@xyz.com.

I have researched this a little and found that it ALWAYS does not work when the visible e-mail address to which the e-mail is addressed is NOT one of the addresses in any of my Thunderbird Accounts (profiles).

If it's addressed to an e-mail address that IS in one of my Thunderbird Accounts (profiles) and I click on the link, one of two things happens:

1. If it's from someone already in my contact list, it works (shows me the content from this sender always).
2. If it's from someone not already in my contact list, the "Add a Contact" window opens so I can edit the contact, add them, and then it works (shows me the content from this sender always).

The problem is when it is NOT addressed to me (i.e. it's an address that is forwarded to me like a list server, auto-forwarded, or there is no "To" line in the header at all).

Oh, yeah, and one other thing.

This problem is new to Thunderbird 3.x.

It worked fine in 2.x.
Same problem and symptoms as Mark except on Windows XP.

Environment

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101207 Lightning/1.0b2 Thunderbird/3.1.7

Reproducible

Always

Steps To Reproduce

(1) Click on "Always load remote content from <email-address-not-in-address-book>"
=> BUG: Opens dialog: "New Contact for <email-address-not-in-address-book>"
=> EXPECTED: Remote images to load in the current and future emails from that sender
(2) Click on "Show Remote Content" button
=> WORKS: Only for the current email - not future emails

Most emails containing remote content come from advertisers whose weekly flyers I'm interesting in seeing; but, whose email addresses would serve no purpose in my address book.

Any update on this?
This bug has been around for a couple of years now, at least on Mac OS X, but perhaps the behavior I'm seeing is slightly different. To wit:

I receive an email from a sender for whom I have previously opted, with success, to "always load remote content". Suddenly, emails from that sender no longer auto-load remote content. When I click on the "always load remote content from XYZ" link, the cursor flashes to indicate that I clicked a link, but absolutely nothing else happens, and the remote content does not load.

From that point on, remote content in emails from that address will NEVER auto-load ever again. I have to click the "Show Remote Content" button every single time (which always works correctly, BTW).

It feels like some kind of corruption in whatever database is used to store the "always load remote content" state. I wish I knew where that info was kept and how to clear it and start over, because at least then I'd have a not-very-painful workaround: clear the decks and start over flagging addresses as "always load remote content" (or not).
Ten months after the last comment, I'm still seeing this problem with Thunderbird 17.0.7 on OS X 10.7.5.
Ditto. Except on Windows 7 (32-bit):
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20130620 Thunderbird/17.0.7

"Platform" field should be updated to indicate it's a problem on all operating systems.
Confirming and changing platform to all.

Seeing the same thing in Seamonkey Mail 2.33.1. If the email is not addressed TO ME, it does not work to mark it "always load remote content". The box pops up each time to allow me to add the contact; the "Allow remote content" box is checked, but it does not remember the setting for the next email from that sender.

The TO address of the email is ONE OF MY IDENTITIES, but not the main email address.
Whatever the problem was here, this has been obsoleted by the complete internal and frontend redesign of remote content handling, starting from bug 457296.
