Spun off from Bug 529240 as Neil thought that the changes in middleMousePaste() should be in a separate bug.
Having looked at cvs blame there appears to be specific reasons why each part of the code is there so we can't just remove a large chunk and replace it with OpenUILink() like Firefox does. The remaining possible optimizations are probably too minor to justify any more work on this bug. Closing as WONTFIX
