[ Internal Sun Bugtraq ID: 4388251 ] On Netscape 6 Mail , The message files (*.msf file generated for each sub-folder) seem to be keep replicating with every new invokation foo browser. When browser is invoked first time and mail is retrieved, it creates a inbox.msf file Quit the browser. Invoke again, and this time it on retreiving mail, it creates a 'inbox.msf' and inbox.msf.msf file and does the same for all other sub-folders. 1) Invoke Netscape 6 2) Click on Mail under Tasks menu option 3) Configure your mail server and point to your IMAP server. 4) Once done, click on 'Mail/New Account Settings' under 'Edit' Menu 5) Choose 'Server' option 6) Choose Advanced option 7) Ensure that 'Show only subscribed folders' is not checked. 8) KEYPOINT: Ensure that the IMAP folder dir. and Local dir fields point to same dir. 8) Choose "Inbox". Click on 'GetMsg button. Everything is fine. 9) Quit browser 10) Invoke again 11) Choose Inbox again and click again on 'GetMsg' All sub-folders create a new <foldername.msf> file Every invokation seems to create a new *.msf file for each file in the Mail dir. With this frequent crashes start occuring. NOTE: I'm using IMAP server and Server setting points to IMAP directory <home dir>/Mail. Are you trying to set your local mail directory and your imap server directory to the same physical directory? That will not work, and should be forbidden.
Yes, that exactly was the problem, but then, user should be blocked from doing so. A simple dir. comparison should be done. when changing Locla DIr, it should be compared with IMAP (if set) dir. to user should be blocked if both are same. Same vice-versa. The Help on Mail does not indicate anything on such and issue nor does current release notes. I think this one should be atlease release noted. Once multiple msf's are created, crash occurence is frequent.
Darn!!!. tons of typos....
That's what I meant by forbidden - the user should not be allowed to do that. However, there's no guarantee that a simple dir comparison would work - the paths/sym links would need to be resolved. Setting these two settings to the same directory has never worked from 4.0 on, and as far as I know, no one has ever tried to do this before.
Well, there is always a first time
setting severity to enhancement since this is a request for a new feature. If this is high priority for sun (is that what the suntrak-n6-highp status whiteboard comment means?) then perhaps someone at sun could provide a patch.
Severity: normal → enhancement
Removing the suntrak-n6-highp status. Not a high priority bug. It is more an RFE.

I'll choose bug 218439 as the bug where this will be fixed as there is more history and more people.
