So this applies to not only unknown protocol, but also malformed URL (e.g. "http://" or "about:foo"), right? And when "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled" is false, all the network errors can cause something like attachment 479286 [details].

JFYI, both bug 382702 and bug 312680 are fixed. i.e. No error code would generate a dialog unless a user intentionally sets false to "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled".

MarcoM: If this bug still bothers you, you should file a new bug or change the summary to: "When error pages are disabled, error dialogs should be tab-modal" or something. Anyway, it should cover all the network errors rather than just protocol errors.
