Updates are now checked in the about dialog on Windows and Linux. Note that the "Check for updates..." menu item can also be found under the application menu on Mac OS X. Question is if this menu item should open the about dialog or not, to avoid duplicated functionality.
Can we get a decision here please?
blocking2.0: --- → ?
and when UX makes the decision please take into consideration bug 599480 and bug 599573
Yes we should do this, no we shouldn't have three different bugs tracking it. I'll leave it to rs to dupe whichever he feels appropriate.

Summary: Should "Check for updates..." menu item open the about dialog? → "Check for updates..." menu item should open the about dialog
If the menu item's gonna do what the bug summery suggests, why not just remove it once and for all? I found this entry redundant the very moment it was added. It's not like every application on Mac needs to have this "Check for updates" thing. Chrome doesn't, in case you're wondering.
(In reply to comment #5) > If the menu item's gonna do what the bug summery suggests, why not just remove > it once and for all? I found this entry redundant the very moment it was added. That would be a separate bug, and not one I'd support. I think that the menuItem is important to retain.
I think this may be a dupe of bug 599480, since that bug is running into this as a problem (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=599480#c9).
