i want the button on the left of tab strip instead of the right. tried to do this via customization and ran into two problems:
1. can't drag the button to the right of the tab strip - no drop indicator appears
2. can't actually drop the button anywhere, even when a drop indicator is visible.
drop and nothing happens.
i did see this error, but it occurs even when i don't do anything except open and close the palette, so maybe not related:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIObserverService.removeObserver]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/search/search.xml :: :: line 91" data: no]

It's on the left by default, except that there's no code to migrate existing currentSets. See bug 585370 comment 326. This won't affect non-beta users.

Thanks. Restore default set put it in the right spot.

To expand on the this won't affect non-beta users comment:
This is only an issue for people who have customized the tabbar under either a previous 4.0 beta or a 4.0 nightly build.
This will not be an issue for people migrating from 3.6, because there was no capability to customize the tabbar under Firefox 3.

*But*, the bug title is still valid, and people who would like the button to be elsewhere can't have it there.
From fiddling with dom inspector, it looks like it is not movable only because it is not removable. I'd see that as a misfeature of toolbars customization... I agree it shouldn't be removable, but that surely shouldn't affect its movability.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/movable-firefox-button/ is probably the behavior you want. The button is not removable.
Despite the existence of an extension, I think it should be default behavior.
