At least in my opinion, it would look better if the back and forward buttons were aligned with the icons of "Get Add-ons", "Extensions", "Appearance" and "Plugins".

Should this block bug 571970 - Main browser chrome should be hidden when viewing in-content UI?

The space above these buttons should be remove. Effectively they should be at the same height as the navigation toolbar with tabs on top.

Thanks so much for your careful thought on this, JK.
If the add-ons manager were its own application, or ran independently of the browser, then I'd say that you have identified an important problem. In such a case I'd recommend Proposed location 2, as the visual theme of the curved box is repeated in the selection category.
However, there's an even more important consideration to factor in. The back and forward buttons especially, but also search, are meant to mirror the main widgets of Firefox's UI. They are shaped similarly and have very similar functionality.
So, for the placement of add-ons manager widgets, what we really want to do is align them with the main Firefox widgets (bug 630682). While this may not be the most natural position in the manager alone, it prevents user's widgets from jumping around as they move between tabs. This is far worse, as it interrupts the user's flow by forcing them to realign their cursor with the button.
I'm going to go ahead and mark this as WONTFIX, but thanks so much for the bug, JK. Your suggestions are fantastic taken independently. :)
