STR:
- Open Minefield, create any number of tabs
- Switch to Panorama UI
- Right-click on Minefield in the taskbar
- Select "close window"
Expected Results: Minefield closes
Actual Results: Panorama UI closes and you are taken into the currently selected tab.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0b8pre) Gecko/20101208 Firefox/4.0b8pre
Able to reproduce. In panorama view closing firefox by right-click on Minefield in the taskbar or clicking on close [X] button at the top does not close minefield, instead panorama window closes and is taken to the main window.
This could possibly be considered a dupe of Bug 608330.

Not quite; even if we fixed this, I would still want another way of closing Firefox with Panorama open. This bug is more about fixing expected behavior with the taskbar, the other bug is talking about the behavior of Panorama.

Why are we punting on a regression? This breaks close window behavior.

We probably also don't want it to interfere with bug 587043 which is only suppose to close Tab Candy and go back to the browser.

Bug 587043 makes it seem like the current behavior is the desired behavior.

If I click the Windows Close window button, regardless of what's displayed in it, I expect the window to close. :) Unless overriding the default Windows behavior of the system command buttons is what we wanted, which I doubt.
cc'ing Alex for UX feedback.

We did want to override existing behavior here. We got consistent feedback that when users closed Panorama, they expected Firefox to still be there (bug 597043). That said, we do want to have a way to close the browser with Panorama open.
Other bugs of interest are:
bug 608330
bug 630792
Also note that we are considering reverting bug 587043, which should fix this bug.

Maybe we just need a more obvious way of getting out of Panorama. I am always tempted to click the close button on the main Panorama tab group to close. I have to stop to think and remember I have click the "little squares icon" way over on the right above search. But I would never think to close the window to exit a mode within the application, FWIW.

The intended behavior is specified over in bug 630792 (we no longer conflate window closing an panorama closing, so that implicitly would fix this bug as well.)

Panorama has been removed from Firefox 45, currently in Beta and scheduled for release on March 7th. As such, I'm closing all existing Panorama bugs.
If you are still using Panorama, you will see a deprecation message in Firefox 44, and when 45 is released your tab group data will be migrated to bookmarks, with a folder for each group. There are also a few addons offering similar functionality.
See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tab-groups-removal for more info.
We're removing Panorama because it has extremely low usage (about 0.01% of users), and has a large number of bugs and usability issues. The cost of fixing all those issues is far too high to justify, and so we'll instead be focusing our time and energy on improving other parts of Firefox.
