This looks particularly bad when scrollbars are visible on the screen in
smaller windows. Tested this on OSX, see screenshot. Is it not possible to

Agreed, it should be inside the content area when you have horizontal scrollbars.

It needs to go away entirely, the tab itself is providing all the information that is needed.

Chrome does the same thing, so I don't see it as that big of a deal.

Additionally, if a sidebar is open the status messages overlay the sidebar making the status seem disconnected from the page.
