The bug had now it's 10 year anniversary. Any chance to have progress on this? Especially, Roger stated the advantages of a RPM/DEB package distributed by Mozilla. Other browser like Opera or Vivaldi do provide such packages.
Even Microsoft plans to distribute offical packages for Linux for its Edge browser (see: https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/).

I wonder how much this use case is covered by the flatpak distribution of Firefox.

And snap:
https://snapcraft.io/firefox
In general, Firefox is very supported by the various Linux and Unix distributions out of the box (example: Debian, Ubuntu, Suse, Redhat/Fedora, Gentoo, Nix, FreeBSD, etc) leveraging their own packaging systems. We, Mozilla, are collaborating with these various distros to make sure that Firefox works well. IMHO, providing .deb/.rpm without providing repository to push updates to users isn't super interesting.
In parallel, if you need to quickly update to the most recent version of Firefox, we are providing binaries with an internal update mechanism.
flatpak and snap are also terrific alternatives.
So, I don't think we need to keep this bug open for the next 10 years... Closing
