User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0
Build Identifier: Firefox 4.0
After selecting the search and typing the catagory the search page listing comes up and the Firefox freezes up and nothing works except using the "X" box to close firefox. My cursor works but unable to select anything except the "- or X' function to close foxfire. Upon restarting Firefox I get a "Close Firefox" box saying "Firfox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system." After closing the processes I can then start a new session of Firefox. No difference using different search engines. Other than this Firefox works great. To search for something I have to use another browser and it works fine.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select search box
2.Type search info
3.Try to select page URL
Actual Results:
Foxfire freezes. Cursor works but unable to select anything on search page except to close Firefox.
Expected Results:
To bring up the website that was selected.

Could you see if the issue occurs if using Firefox in safe mode:
http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
How about with a new, empty testing profile? (Don't install any addons into it)
http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
Hardware: x86_64 → x86
Version: unspecified → 4.0 Branch
Ed, thanks for your responce. I did restart into the foxfire safe mode and the search function worked ok. At this time I don't use any addons that I know of. After restarting I still had the same problem. I will try to create a new profile and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks

If you click the orange Firefox button top left of the screen then choose "addons", then switch to the "extensions" section, you should see a list of addons. Try turning a few of them on/off at a time, until the culprit is found. (Note that Firefox has to be restarted for the enable/disable addon changes to take effect).
Ed,
Again many thanks for your help. After going to extensions and turning off the McAfee SiteAdvisor 3.3.1 the search function works great. Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for the update - glad you got it sorted.
McAfee will need to fix the problem, so in the meantime leave it disabled.

Closing old bugs in the Plugins component. We aren't going to track issues in 3rd-party plugins in the Mozilla bug tracker. In addition, support for NPAPI plugins will be removed at the end of this year; for more details see the post at https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/
If there is a serious bug in Firefox, it needs to be filed in the "Core" product, "Plug-Ins" component.
