It has been my experience that we have had to do one-off's of these values in the past beyond the automated addition of Alpha / Beta N. It *might* be a good thing to just leave PRE_RELEASE_SUFFIX as "" so if we ever find ourselves wanting to do this again it is extremely easy to do. For example, if we removed it and wanted to add a suffix we would have to modify all of the following places in browser.xul http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/search?string=PRE_RELEASE_SUFFIX and leaving it isn't causing any harm. Perhaps just a comment?
