User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 When you right click on a webpage with a background image and choose "View Background Image" from the displayed context menu, the browser opens the background image in the same tab, thereby obscuring the page. To return to the page, you have to click the Back button and then the page loads again (the "Connecting...", "Waiting...", and other processes repeat). Most of the time, the users would want to stay on the page while wishing to have a glimpse of the full background image. It's desirable to open the background image in a new tab/window while keeping the original webpage open, or at least an option can be provided. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open a webpage with a background image, say, Firefox's Twitter profile at "http://twitter.com/firefox". 2. Right click on the page and choose "View Background Image". Actual Results: The profile page is replaced with the image. You need to load the page again by clicking the Back button. Expected Results: The image should open in a new tab, some people prefer that.

Thanks for pointing out that bug. Hope the option stays but maybe modified.

The general convention across the entire browser (and other browsers as well) has always been * Click: open in current tab * Middle-click: open in new tab This applies for this particular menu item, and I don't think there is a pressing need to change this well-established convention.
... except that there's no middle mouse button on most laptops (including all 3 of mine); pressing the left and right together does not emulate a middle click, either.
(In reply to comment #5) > pressing the left and right together does not emulate a > middle click, either. In all the laptops I have ever used, that is configurable. On my laptops with a Synaptics touchpad, I can configure the touchpad to emulate a middle-click if I tap a certain corner of the pad. On my laptops with an Alps touchpad, there is the option to have left+right=middle.
Could you tell me where those settings are hidden in Windows 7 Ultimate? I mostly need the feature working on a Compaq Presario notebook. I do not know how to determine whether I have a Synaptics or Alps (or another) touchpad. Thanks in advance. PS: When I open the Device Manager and expand "Mice and other pointing devices", it shows just one entry: "PS/2 Compatible Mouse".
Windows, by default, uses a generic mouse driver that does not provide features like touchpad scrolling or middle-click emulation. You need to install the touchpad drivers specific to your particular model (go to your manufacturer's website) to gain access to these settings. Alternatively, if your touchpad is Synaptics (again, check with your laptop manufacturer's website), you can also go to the Synaptics website and grab the latest driver (which is usually newer/better than the one found on the laptop manufacturer's website). But Alps does not directly provide drivers, and if you have an Alps touchpad, you'll need to get them from the laptop manufacturer's website.
Thank you for the steps. However, they have not helped so far. I followed the steps and successfully installed the required Alps driver from the manufacturer's website. The bundled application opens the window whose screenshots I attached as a PNG image above. The option to configure the simultaneous clicking of the two buttons to simulate a middle-click is not present, to the best of my knowledge. If I missed something, please have a look at the screenshots and guide. Thanks again.
Just discovered: Clicking the menu entry "View Background Image" while holding down the Ctrl key opens the image in a new tab. And the Ctrl key (or equivalent) is present in all end-user computers. Guess this solves the problem for most users.
