User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1 Since the url bar allows searching via keywords, the search box can be seen and superfluous and removed. However, if one wishes to manage search engines, one will need to re-add the search box to their tool bar and select "Manage Search Engines..." from the box's drop-down menu. One can then remove the search box again. This is obviously a highly unintuitive and inefficient method for managing search engines when the search box is not visible. For comparison, Opera 11.11 allows managing search engines via its Preferences. Reproducible: Always
The plan is to do it thru the Add-Ons tab, see bug 335781
Well, one plan is anyhow :) See also bug 522040.
The plan to do so has been going on for about five years now, I see. One can be either hopeful that change is right around the corner or else, well....
Bug 335781 is already on schedule for one of the upcoming Firefox releases (definitely past Firefox 7).
