Those who know biff better, we would have to check in this sound file in the
different formats for each OS, right?

I was going to mark this wontfix, but I'll lob it over to marlon
it's up to him if he wants to use this.
marlon owns the bug to create a new .wav file for mozilla.
stephend: nsISound works with .wav files, so we only need one .wav file to get
this to work on all platforms.

Hmm...can we check this file in, in the meantime? No offense to Joe, but his
"beep!" gets old, fast ;-).

I heard the female voice for biff. How about a female voice saying 'you've got
mail' same as aol but a female voice. Just saying what came to my mind when
listening to the attached file. If it is a bad idea just ignore.:(

A while back, AT&T WorldNet (I think) got sued by AOL for using the same phrase,
"You've got mail". I think AOL has that trademarked, but I can't remember the
outcome. It would be best for Mozilla if we stayed clear of any copyrighted
phrases or sounds.

the best thing to do is involve some marketing thought on this. not sure who to
cc, but i think a good solution would be to have something original created by a
professional. as a last resort we could use public domain, or even purchase some
stock sound clips, however the quality of the product would appear to be
amatuerish.
i would still like to do this but my plate is full, and there is no priority set
on this bug.

Kevin - do you object to this new sound?
Comment 12•24 years ago

I do object. If we're going to use a human voice, it needs to be unique to
Netscape, and not something available publically. I realize that this would be
difficult and potentially costly, so we should probably pursue a sound that AOL
owns, that isn't "You've Got Mail," and use this in the commercial build. WRT
Mozilla, I think it's fully appropriate for the sound to be public domain. I
will get in touch with someone in Dulles and see what the possibilities are.

Let's just ignore AOL's pleasures.
Let AOL sue - mozilla.org, i.e. Netscape (legally)! *bg*
I'll trademark "I am the president".
The attached sounds have background noise. BTW: IMO, we should use a 44k, 16bit
sound.
Anyway, I like the current sound :-). It's funny.

hold off on that patch.
before we hack the C++ to do this, I think we can just change the default prefs
to cause it to beep. (I sent a private email about this.)

So, I can quickly imagine a loud ding getting old right away. On Windows, at
least, why aren't we using the "New Mail Notification" sound event, which
appears to be a Windows default (and defaulting to beep if there's no sound for
that)?

Blake,
For now, we shouild go with this XP solution. Let us track all other better
defaults, if any, for a given platform as improvements over this.
