After upgrading from Firefox 5 to 6, people are complaining about the addon manager "hanging" when it gets opened. From talking to these people, it sounds like they're opening the manager to the "Get Addons" tab.
If you're on a fast connection (and AMO's not being slow due to all the update requests from the recent Firefox update), it's not so bad, as it'll load in a few seconds.
But if you're on a slower connection (or AMO/other mozilla servers are getting pounded), it can take a long time for it to load. (Jorendorff on IRC says the initial download is around 1.9MB.)
If the Addon Manager defaulted to the "Extensions" tab (or Plugins/Appearance), the "Get Addons" tab could have time to load in the background, sparing the user from seeing it sit there. Bug 679604 makes that not possible immediately after an upgrade, though.
Is there any way that AMO can serve less data initially until the user actually requests more from the server? (Or maybe start displaying content as it is downloaded, not waiting until the request completes to show everything at once?)

Well that's not an issue with the discovery pane, but the add-ons manager. With the upgrade we do not set the correct category and simply fail to display any site until the user selects a category.

I don't think this is a dupe, this bug is asking for the pageload of the discovery pane to be lower, at at least partially render the content rather than waiting for it to be completely downloaded.

So it should be a dupe of bug 635610.
