From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux 2.2.13 i586; en-US; m18) Gecko/20010201 BuildID: 2001020108 I have a my.mp3 account. I was trying to play one of my albums; to do so I followed the instructions on the site, which were basically to set up a helper application for audio/mpeg (mp3) and I chose xmms as my application. I then restarted moz. However, on clicking play, nothing happened, and I was taken again to the my.mp3 configuration help page. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Set up xmms as a helper application for audio/mpeg (mp3). Try to play an album on my.mp3.com Actual Results: User is taken to configuration setup page. Expected Results: xmms should pop up and play my albums.

Looks like this and bug 68676 are dupes. FYI I entered the full path of xmms (/usr/bin/xmms).
So I defined helper apps for PDF, RealAudio, and XMMS-Playlist files, and for all of them, if "Ask me before opening downloaded files of this type" is checked, then the helper application is either not started or dies immediately because it has been given bad args (no error message is displayed that I can see). If no header is defined, the dialog box that allows you to open or save pops up, which is normal. However, if a helper is defined, but "Ask me..." is unchecked, the dialog pops up as normal, but does not have the application pre-filled-in. These behaviors began sometime between 0.7 and 0.8. In 0.7, helper applications work fine whether or not handlers are defined, and whether or not the "Ask me..." button is checked.

gabriel, I don't think this is a duplicate of bug 68676. beland, If I understand what you're saying then I see a different behavior. Define a helper application for: mime type: audio/x-mpegurl extension: m3u helper: /usr/bin/xmms Ask: true Save this, and after you have restarted moz (see bug 69878) Open a playlist. You should be prompted to either open the file using the helper or save the file. Choosing the helper launches xmms correctly for me. Now edit this mime type and uncheck the 'Ask before ...' button. Save this, and after you have restarted moz (see bug 69878) Open a playlist. Nothing happens. If you check you /tmp directory you'll find you playlist (random file name.m3u) but the helper won't be launched.

Yes I had 'ask before' unchecked. It should've launched the helper app.

ask me support hasn't been implemented yet. That's why it's greyed out in the open / save dialog. I didn't realize the browser group's edit helper app dialog had it enabled. This should definetly be disabled until we actually implement support for that. I'll try to re-assign this to the edit helper app dialog owner so they can disable that radio box.
Ask me (as set in the preferences panel) used to work unless I am remembering very badly. I think the reason the box is shaded out is different. I complained some time ago that I was expecting the box to work like (I think) it does on windows, i.e., you get the Save/Open with dialog for a new mime type, you go to open, pick your helper app, check the box, and then your choice is put into your preferences and is used from then on out. You'd never have to go into preferences directly. Right now, the Open with field isn't pre-filled for me either, even though all the mime types match. Should I delete my rdf file and start over again?
I don't understand. This is supposed to work if 'ask me' is checked, but now it is impossible to check the 'ask me' box ? I am getting confused. All I want to be able to do is to define a default application for a certain mime type. I don't really care if I am prompted to save the file or use the defined application.

With the 20010405 build on linux, I absolutely cannot get helper applications to work at all. I've deleted mimeTypes.rdf, ~/.mozilla/, and filled in the preferences at each stage to try to view a postscript file. Whenever I click on one, mozilla knows it is an application/postscript but there is nothing in the box with a program name. This is a complete show stopper as far as I am concerned and I'm forced to use NN 4.7x until this is fixed. I simply can't live without the ability to view PDF and similar files using external viewers.
My guess is that the last complaint is related to bug 67549. I have not been able to get application/postscript to work for a long time either, but application/pdf works fine for me in Linux build 2001040607. I believe this is related to the fact that Mozilla sets up default mime types, which include postscript but not pdf.
On build 2001042906 (Linux) I have the following Helper Application defined Extension: PLS MIME type: audio/x-cpls Application: /usr/bin/xmms Ask me: False Then I go to http://www.shoutcast.com/ and when I try to listen to some music nothing happens. I'm sure this worked before. If I change "Ask me: true", it works correctly. When I switch the "Ask me" option I have to restart Mozilla to take effect. Is that an expected behaviour ?

This bug seems to be a duplicate of bug #69308 "xmms does not play when added as helper app on linux".
*** Bug 69308 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Is anybody seeing any behaviour that is only specific to xmms (as the title of the bug #69308 suggested)? If yes, it should be reflected in the bug title. If not, then this bugs seems to be a duplicate of bug #68009 - "Helper app doesn't launch when 'Ask me...' unchecked". To answer gabriel@pixle.demon.co.uk's question - the way you can check/uncheck the "Always ask me" setting is by going into helper apps config screen in Preferences. The fact that it is greyed out in the "Downloading" dialog is addressed by bug #52454, but it does not make sence to fix #53454 until #68009 is fixed.
I agree, this bug is a duplicate of bug 68009
