Does performing the steps listed in http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals help at all? I realize you said there's no pattern in your case, but just to check....

I installed 'Places Maintenance' earlier but omitted to run the 'expire' option. I have just done so and will report back. I'm not sure which of the 8.0 betas the bug was fixed in... In any case, it's quite possible that you're seeing a different problem; I just wanted to make sure of that.

The fix worked. I no longer have the problem
