I upgraded to Thunderbird 8.0 ("About Thunderbird" reports that I am up to date) and since then typing in the compose window was very slow. Some restarting without plugins and manually disabling plugins led me to the conclusion that it is the default theme ("Thunderbird (default 8.0)") installed with Thunderbird 8.0 that is the culprit. When I enable another theme and restart, everything is OK, but when I re-enable the default theme typing is slow again. Since the workaround (using another theme) is easy, this is not a big problem for me, but if someone else has the same problem, this might provide some help.
Are you running the default Aero, Basic or classic theme in Windows?
I was running a custom Aero theme, but I just changed to the standard Aero theme "Windows 7", then restarted Thunderbird with the "Thunderbird (default 8.0)" theme enabled, and the error remained. Then I selected the *non*-Aero theme "Windows classic" and the problem went away. Good debugging there, Andreas!

Good debugging there, Andreas! in that case caused by hardware acceleration, and fixed in version 9
