User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:8.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0.1 Build ID: 20111120135848 Steps to reproduce: Open Thunderbird (realize that you want to change your view options) Open View menu and mouse over folders (Thunderbird connects to the first account and realizes that it needs the password) Attempt to type my password (nothing typed) Actual results: Nothing typed Attempt to click Password window text box Attempt to type (nothing typed) Attempt to click menu (nothing happens) Press Escape (password requires goes away and comes back, now I still can't type and in the same boat as before) Press Escape multiple times really fast (password requires goes away, menu closes, password requires comes back, now I can type) Expected results: I should have been able to type or close the menu. Screenshot shows that keyboard input is captured by the menu while escape and clicks are captured by the password dialogue. (Between the top and bottom shot, I attempt to type the letter R.)

(In reply to Loren Klingman from comment #0) This could be similar to bug 542498.

Loren does this also happens if you start Thunderbird in -safe-mode ?

You can cause a freeze with this with a slightly different series of events: 1. Open thunderbird 2. Wait for dialog (User decides they want to close thunderbird and not login (eg they realize they have no internet or don't need it)) 3. Quickly Click cancel and Alt+F4 or Cmd+Q 4. Dialog will come back and interrupt the exit process but will not respond to any clicks.

Sorry guys still seeing with 16.0.2 with the on start email check as mentioned above. I will be adding a video attachment to show what happens. Where it looks like I'm doing nothing, I'm trying to type in the box. Between tries 2 and 3 (where it actually works) I've hit escape a bunch of times. The hang still happens also.

This video shows the crash. Part A is where I force close after the crash, Part B is a start where the menu properly gets cleared, Part C is a start where the hang happens.

I can't reproduce this ... but then I don't really understand the STR from comment #0. Do you need to have set up more than one account to see this bug? Any other special (non-default) settings required? Anyone else able to reproduce this?

You have to have at least one account set to check at start up and a password set to protect your passwords (Use a master password). I think that should be all that is required to reproduce. I'm running on Mac Lion.

Thanks for the info.
I can now reproduce this ... sort of, I think. But it's a temporary condition that's very easy to get out of (and very easy to diagnose).
If I manage to open the View menu before the master password dialog comes up (tricky to do), the View menu sometimes stays open above the dialog. When this happens I can't type in the dialog's text box.
But all I need do to get out of this is cancel the dialog. The master password dialog come up again any time I try to access one of my remote mail folders.
> Open View menu and mouse over folders
Please expand on this. I still don't know what it means.

Just the folders sub-menu of the view window, but if you got it to work, then that step may be unnecessary. I have 7 mail accounts. Based on your note, that should mean that the password box opens up to 7 times if I hit cancel. What that really means is I click cancel 2-3 times and assume the window will never go away so I attempt to close thunderbird so I can restart and try again. But if you try to close Thunderbird while the window is up that results in a hang.

Javi, can you check and if you think this is valid bug please confirm Reporter writes "downloaded version 31 and tested my old steps. Typing in the dialog box works, though the dialog box does get stuck behind the view menu so you can't always see what you are typing, you can type and interact with it. If you have only one account set to start at start up, you can quit thunderbird (CMD+Q) with the dialog box up and thunderbird won't hang, but if you have 2 accounts and quit during the first dialog box popup, thunderbird closes but the icon gets stuck and you have to force quit. (I'm assuming this has something to do with clearing the first login attempt, but the second account which is set to check at start up tries to fire another login attempt and gets blocked by the master password before the exit gets processed, but the dialog box can't be created because the app is closing so maybe it needs an exiting flag in the master password or dialog box script that fails the dialog if the app is shutting down?) This is on OS X Yosemite."

Another victim of bug 476541? If so, please mark bug 476541 as blocking, rather than dupe this bug to it.

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk, use Needinfo for questions) from comment #22) > Another victim of bug 476541? This one is not exactly at that. Other bugs required opening a dialog and then opening another dialog. However, in this one it is required to have and keep opened a menu for this bug to reproduce. > If so, please mark bug 476541 as blocking, rather than dupe this bug to it. So, as it is possible that menues are using same code as dialog boxes, I will mark it as blocking. Someone more experienced could then change it.

Do you still see this problem when using version 45?

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk, NI for questions) from comment #24) > Do you still see this problem when using version 45? To be more clear bug 476541 was closed WFM partly on the basis of bug 1224790 being fixed in Firefox 45. So the question is, is this bug still seen on Mac in Thunderbird 45? (see comment 18 - 20)

Running Mac OS X 10.11.5 I can partly reproduce the problem in a new profile with one pop account and choosing a master password. Immediately after TB startup I keep the "View" menu open until the master password dialog box pops up. At this moment the View menu gets stuck and I can't type the master password in the box, as shown in the videos. But I can still hit the "Cancel" button to close the dialog box, upon which the View menu collapses, too. And the dialog box won't pop up again until I hit the "Get Messages" button.

This being a Mac bug I don't know if it will help, but very pleased if it does ... Please try Mac build from bug 1176399 at https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/try-builds/mozilla@kewis.ch-28d2d61cb151fdbb400fad592fddca6c81a7dd58/try-comm-central-macosx64/thunderbird-53.0a1.en-US.mac.dmg Does it it help? Any complications/things that don't work well, or that it broke? One possible complication is mentioned at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1176399#c27 Thanks

I can no longer reproduce this issue with my Daily 53.0a1 copy running in a separate profile with a master password. When I succeed to open the "View" (or any other) menu BEFORE the master password popup box is displayed, I'm still able to fill in the password and to hit the "OK" button, even if the menu drop-down partly hides the password box. There is no blocking or freeze. Since Daily launches very quickly on my Mac and the master password box will be displayed almost immediately, it is very tricky trying to open a menu before the box shows up.
