The only way I've managed to start 3D view without selection is move mouse to the bottom of the window, press ctrl+shift+i and click 3D. (That actually may select body element)
I agree with you, but I'm wondering why this should be a problem? Is there any particular use case in which you'd like to start Tilt without a selection? You can always "unhighlight" the current selection after you started Tilt by clicking somewhere outside the 3D webpage mesh.

This is gonna be easier once we will get the Global Developer Toolbar, where we will get an "inspect" button. We could also have an "Inspect 3D" to launch the inspector in 3D mode.

I, as a Gecko developer, want to just see how some random web page is constructed.
I agree. Tilt can be use in 2 contexts: Node Context (I want to select a specific node and I need a 3D view for that), Page Context (I want to get a 3D representation of the page, and maybe, I will select a node). The Inspector is always open with the 2D view first. I think having a 3D button to launch the 3D view can be interesting too. In the Global Toolbar, we can probably add a button to run the 3D version of the inspector. The button would be hidden by default but we could be Drag-n-dropped in the toolbar (like with the other Firefox toolbars). If this behavior make sense, we should mark this bug depending on bug 717915.

Makes sense, I can see that work nicely.
This is somewhat fixed by bug 725717. Command is "tilt open" in the Web Console (needs gcli pref true).
