Changing the screen resolution also changes the alignment of the thumbnail image taken on a page. This makes images align to the right. See screenshots for examples. 1680/1050 resolution-windows XP-in the correct example 1280/1024 resolution Ubuntu-images are aligned to the right.

This is absolutely fine behavior. The thumbnail images are aligned from top left of the page. So if the size of thumbnail changes (on changing Firefox Window Size) then more (or less) part of the image inside the thumbnail is visible. Also this should not be dependent on bug 455553, instead should be blocking it. This is a works fine for me.
Not sure my choice of words was best. The screenshot for a visited page (e.g. with the resolution specified in comment 0 on Ubuntu) is cropped and aligned to the right (alignment to right attachment). There is no resizing involved for that specific resolution, visiting a page and loading new tab should display the thumbnail as it appears in the attachment. I would have expected that the entire page be displayed and centered when the screenshot is cached-without window resizing. No longer depends on: 455553
Let me explain again. The actual thumbnail image is of the whole page, and it is not stretched at all. So now on you ubuntu system , the screen width is lets say around 800px (for ex) So lets say each thumbnail comes to be around 200px in width, so the only left most 200px of the thumbnail of the page are visible which make it look like that the thumbnail are right aligned. But in you XP, the screen width is more, (as the Firefox is maximized) lets assume it to be 1200 px. So each thumbnail comes to be around 330px in width, So in each thumbnail, leftmost 330px of actual image are visible. Now the scaling used in showing the thumbnail is 25%, so that means in 330px of width, around 1200px of page width is visible, which almost makes it the whole page (in terms of width). But on your ubuntu, with 200px of image width, 800px of page width is visible, thus the right most 400px is left out and not visible. You can see the effect while resizing the window.
