General concensus on IRC was that django-storages w/ the boto backend was the way to go: http://django-storages.readthedocs.org/en/latest/backends/amazon-S3.html
If your investigation turns up something else, let us know. This bug is to work with Jeremy to get AMO/mkt using S3 instead of the filesystem. Bug 721572 abstracted the storage layer so this should be just a matter of plugging in the new library. As if it's ever that simple. :)
Jeremy already has a script which will pre-fill S3.

oremj, could you put the S3 credentials in my home dir (kmcmillan on khan or wherever) so I can use a scratch bucket for testing?
