IE has a Help menu entry: "For Netscape Users" which help new users to migrate from Netscape to IE. We should add a menu entry: "For IE Users" to help new users to migrate from IE to Mozilla. There is Netscape 4.5 info on home.netscape.com that could be used as a starting point: http://home.netscape.com/browsers/using/ieusers/index.html

In addition to the link cited at the top of this bug, here's another URL with IE- to-Netscape migration info: http://home.netscape.com/download/netscape_now.html The Netscape 6.1 Help menu has been pared down to a leaner, more easily navigable list, and the initial screen of Help (rather than the Help menu) now provides pointers to key topics. This approach enables us to add information after UI freeze deadlines (we're changing content instead of UI) and makes it easier for customers to find the main help. (The mish-mash of items in the old Help menu obstructed "find-ability") I believe this IE migration item should go on this new Help front page instead of adding an item to the browser help menu. Reassigning to Steve Rudman, who's working with UE to develop the Help front page, to determine the best place to fit the pointers to IE conversion info.

This is a Netscape bug, and doesn't belong in Bugzilla. Plus, Mozilla is a developer's platform.

> This is a Netscape bug, and doesn't belong in Bugzilla. Why is helping IE users migrate to Mozilla, a "Netscape bug"?

Reopen. If you think Mozilla, despite being a development software, really need end user documentation for converts, you might have a better chance of getting this fixed if you start writing and posting docs

Summary: Help files for Microsoft Internet Explorer Users → Add help for Microsoft Internet Explorer users
I think some of the people at evangelmoz.mozdev.org are working on a New User Wizard that could cover stuff like this. From a recent message to the evangelmoz newsgroup: Here tell me what you think: ____________________________________________________________________________ Introduction Thank you for trying Mozilla. This Wizard is for new users to this suite. There are most likely differences from your other browser/mail client and this wizard is to help you start out. To continue to Mozilla Lingo, click next. To start using and customizing Mozilla right now, go ahead and click cancel. New users should take this Wizard though. It's only like 4 pages. ____________________________________________________________________________ Mozilla Lingo Mozilla has names for the same actions in other browsers. Most everything is self explanitory but here is a list of some examples. Favorites = Bookmarks Refresh = Reload Internet Options = Prefences Copy Shortcut = copy link location (same with images) Address Bar = URL Bar skins = themes Most everyhting else is called the same things. Click next to go to Interface _________________________________________________________________________ Interface (picture of netscape 4 skin browser) The mozilla User Interface is easy to use and see. You can download "themes" (skins) to change the colors, icons, and shape the the interface. The Classic theme uses the Windows colors while the modern theme uses it's own grey color that stands out. The main tool bar contains the back, foward, reload, and stop buttons, URL Bar, search and print buttons, and the throbber (loading animation) The personal toolbar has a bookmarks button and other buttons you can put on or off through Mozilla prefences. The Side Bar is a convienent place to keep stuff like search, history, and bookmarks. The Tab Bar displays your tabs open. The close button closes the selected tab. The Component Bar is like a quick launch for the other Mozilla features. You can turn tool bars off by View > Show/Hide ____________________________________________________________________________ Importing When you first start Mozilla, the bookmarks will have some Mozilla sites and a Imported IE favorites Folder. If this folder is empty, do this: Go into IE, File > Import and Export. Export Favorites. Try to send it to Mozilla but if that is dimmed, just click next. finish that wizard, then go to Mozilla. Bookmarks > Manager Bookmarks. Click tools > import. Find the file named Bookamrks, most likely in My Documents, and done. If you want your mail settings in Mozilla Mail, go to tools, import, and go through that wizard. _______________________________________________________________________________ We hope you enjoy! See if you like Mozilla as your browser. If you found a bug, you can try to submit it to bugzilla. Be sure to go through prefences. first and set everyhting the way you want it. The recommended settings are have google as your search engine, everything in Tabbed Browsing checked, the first four checkboxed in Advanced > scripts and unchecked, and piplining enabled. Click Finish to begin using Mozilla.
fixed in Netscape 7.1 . Any possibility of this checked into Mozilla Help?

for those who are too lazy to download netscape 7.1 to see what it has...
I'll post a patch for this bug if no one is currently working on it.

This adds the appropriate items to the Help file. Problem I'm having: I added the IE Users HTML file to mozilla\extensions\help\resources\locale\en-US but it is not being jar'ed with the rest of the help files. Does anyone know the reason for this? I thought the makefiles make all the files in the directory get jar'ed, but maybe I'm wrong. Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to the way Mozilla handles chrome, so sorry if this is something obvious.

This is the help file that I've added that has been changed for Mozilla. Apparently it won't be diff'ed with patch.

This is (currently) the final help to be checked in. I've triple checked for errors and everything looks fine to me. If you find errors, tell me (as always). This attachment fixes problems Comment #21 said (Thanks for the feedback, Daniel!). The final patch should be coming up soon. Added the following from previous attachment: o Mozilla Keyboard Shortcuts o Importing Email from Outlook & Outlook Express

Robin, can you check this in? > *Pop-up Window Controls*: Lets you allow or suppress both popup > and popunder windows. (bug 188159) link not working. > *Sidebar*: Customize Mozilla with frequently accessed content > and tools such as news, MapQuest^(TM), stock quotes, a calendar, > and many other options. MapQuest is a Netscape Network service. We might want to avoid putting it there? + Have at your fingertips frequently accessed contents and tools, + such as news, search, horoscopes, and stock quotes. > *Cookie Manager*: Lets you change what Mozilla will do when > accepting cookies through it's support for the P3P Privacy > standard. its, not it's :-p "P3P Privacy standard" -> "P3P privacy standard" with link > *Mail & Newsgroups*: Conveniently manage all your Internet... + *Messenger* (Mail & Newsgroup): ... > *ChatZilla*: Built-in IRC client that lets you easily > communicate with people over the IRC communication protocol. should we have this, since we don't have any Help file on Chatzilla? + *ChatZilla*: Built-in IRC client that lets you chat with + other people over IRC networks. > Migrating from Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express -delete- notice you already have an import link up somewhere. > You will notice that Internet Explorer and Mozilla... + Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla...
Attached patch Patch 1.0 (deleted) — Splinter Review
This is the patch that adds "For Internet Explorer" users to the Help menu in Mozilla. Also, it adds "For Internet Explorer" help to the Help Menu (in Help Contents and Help Index).

Could someone review/check in this patch + help file?
> should we have this, since we don't have any Help file on Chatzilla? I think we should since it is a major component of Mozilla. It's at least major enough to be in the Window menu.
Moving the Product to Browser - Help so I can get review for this patch.

Yes, I'm not sure how to make diff add files :). It just wouldn't do it for me!
Could someone with CVS access check this in?
oeschger - could you check this in for me?

R.J.--I am happy to check this in for you--got it all ready here--but you'll need to get an sr for this as well. Changes to the UI, particularly ones that have been as UNunanimous and high-level as this, definitely need full, general approval.
