Mike, I think what you're seeing is bug 96446, right-clicking on the url bar (whether it's focused or not) selects the entire URL.
Yes, granted. (I did confirm that bug.) The fix for bug 96446 will involve making sure that a URL bar with focus doesn't get all it's content selected.
