I prefer my time to be in 24-hour mode but there seems no way to do this

I’m afraid this has been accepted as is for v1: the 12/24-hour format is locale-specific.

Yep, we'll need to add the toggle for this option back into Settings > Date & Time. I've captured that in bug 812419 and am marking this a dupe.
