Matthew pointed me to th bug 28575, which is verified a long time ago, so rather
than reopen, I thought I'd make a more specific bug.
Firstly, you're really talking about Netscape releases here, since Moz isn't
aimed at end users and a developer is going to be very aware of where he or she
installed something. But the Netscape installer will likely do what the Mozilla
one does, so this is still on topic, and it can't hurt Moz.
Taking a bit of background from the old bug:
2> We will have higher visibility (apparently not all Mac users are aware
>of the new OS 8.5 Applicatiosn folder). Further, we want to make it as
> simple as possible for users to find the Mozilla Folder.
An automatic Applications folder might be new with 8.5 but the convention has
existed among users since as early as System 6 (1986)
If you want visibility, leave the folder open after installing. (I've no doubt
Netscape marketing will want to do something appaling like sticking Netscape's
icon in my dock, but hey, I know how to remove it again ;)
3> Primarily Apple software is installed in the Applications folder.
That's just plain untrue!
---
Anyway, new relevant information includes this description of how the Finder
discovers applications:
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/SystemOverview/SystemOverview/Finder/
iInformation__the_Finder.html
Unless we install into the Applications folder new user accounts on a Mac OS X
box won't be able to see Mozilla (or netscape) until the user happens to open our
folder, which means we won't appear in any lists of applications able to open
types of files etc.
The question of "which applications folder" is addressed by:
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/SystemOverview/SystemOverview/
FileSystem/How_the_Fil_s_Organized.html
On Mac OS X we should definately be defaulting to install in Applications. On Mac
OS 9 its more a matter of taste, but its now been several years and releases, the
applications folder is well ingrained in the popular Mac user's concious, and we
are talking about the default location... the user can change it, though on OS X
a warning might be in order.
