The music player can sometimes get killed (see bug 825478). When it is, your phone gets into a state where "background" playing of music no longer works.

That is, going back from the music playing app to the home screen, or pressing the power button to turn off the screen, or having the screen time out and turn off, causes the music to stop playing.
