We draw different things depending on the sizes.
Interestingly drawing seems to break at the following sizes:
16x271
15x254
14x236
13x220
If the width is 1 wider drawing works. In each case, for every decrease in height the width threshold decreases by 17.

Jeff says soft blocker is okay. This is a scary bug, though, and *could* be a driver issue.

This doesn't reproduce on a Galaxy S2. This makes me believe it's a driver bug.
Bug 788411 and bug 792966 are likely this. AFAICT too it's an adreno issue, didn't happen on nexus s either.
