spun off from bug 79837 --not sure if it's a really a dup of it, but it might be
the cause of this. found using 2001.06.06.03-branch comm bits on mac, when
trying to download an .exe file.
recipe:
0. make sure you do *not* have a helper application defined for
applicaton/octet-stream. if you do, go to Preferences dialog > Helper
Applications and remove it. to be sure, quit and restart the app after doing so.
1. go to either an http or ftp site which contains .exe files, eg:
http://law.mcom.com/download.html --if someone could provide a public one, pls
do!
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/
2. single-click the link for the .exe. in the samples in step (1) use:
http - click any of the "via http" links
ftp - go into a dir that contains such a file and click it
3. when the dialog from bug 79837 appears [see the screenshot there], wait a
1-2sec, then click the Cancel button.
4. now, create/edit the helper app [via the prefs dialog]:
Description: Exe file handler
Extension: exe
action ["handled by"]: save to disk
5. repeat steps 1-2; when the download dialog appears [which should look fine],
click OK and save the file.
6. go into Prefs dialog > Helper Apps, and remove the helper app for
application/octet-stream.
7. click OK to save/dismiss Prefs dialog.
8. quit and restart app.
9. reopen Prefs dialog > Helper Apps.
observe: the entry for application/octet-stream is still there.
workaround: after step 9, quit and restart the browser again. but make sure
during this session to *not* do a download --just go directly into prefs and
remove the helper app entry. quit and restart yet again. the entry should then
be removed.

nav triage team:
I've posted a fix for 79837. Then we'll pick up the internet config setting for
octet-stream and the helper app dialog will look okey dokey. Therefore marking
nsbeta1-, p4, and mozilla1.0 since we should look into why the pref can't be
removed.
