From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.1) Gecko/20010607 BuildID: 2001060703 In trying to use java applets, I found I needed to install the Java plugin. I clicked on the hole where the applet should have been, which led me to download and install the Java 1.3.0_01 plugin. It downloaded successfully, and installed fine. I can even double-click the icon in the control panel, everything checks out fine. The browser even reports a successful download and install (even before the download finishes). After the full install, clicking on the applet asks me to (again) download the plugin. Closing the browser and re-opening it states that the browser needs to close due to an install that's happening, and to reboot. I reboot, and alas, still no Java. The same blank hole, the same click, the same request to download the Java plugin. I even tried uninstalling Java and reinstalling it, and installing to a custom directory as opposed to the default directory. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start with a Win98 box with no Java plugin. 2. Click on a java applet, follow the instructions to install the plugin. 3. Try clicking on the java applet after the install. 4. Also try closing the browser and re-opening it. 5. Also try rebooting. Actual Results: No java support nomatter what. Expected Results: Java should load the applet I'm clicking on on the webpage. It's not just the demicron webpage, it's all webpages with a java applet on it. I'm using Win98SE.
i believe the java setting under preferences/advanced have java disabled by default. Do you have it enabled there? Also see comments in bug 84463
