The under-line is too close to the text and line space is too small. I'll attach snapshots of the same page rendered by moz & IE.

What is the URL of the website? It's possible that this is invalid due to standards.
The snapshot is part of the first page of : http://www.sohu.com but it is reproducible on almost every Simplified Chinese web site.
The corresponding html excerpt is (sorry for the Chinese text) : ... <tr> <td class=itm valign=top>·</td><td class=itm width=165> <a href="http://news.sohu.com" onClick="javascript:window.open('http://news.sohu.com/36/05/news145500536.shtml')"> ????????? ????????"??"(?)</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td class=itm valign=top>·</td><td class=itm width=165> <a href="http://news.sohu.com/93/44/subject145424493.shtml" target="_blank">?? ??????????????????(?)</a></td> </tr> ... where style class itm is : .itm { FONT-FAMILY: ??; FONT-SIZE: 12px} "??" in the above line is standard system font on Simplified Chinese Windows. I know maybe it is not good practice using fonts this way in HTML, but AFAIK most Chinese web sites do that sort of things (using hard-coded Windows font names).

4.x has the same result as mozilla. It may be related the line height calculation.

Quoting from bug 87776 comment, > It's OK to mark this one as a duplicate of that > one. But I dont't think this problem should be > delayed to the future. It really has to do with > usability of the product. > Clearing the milestone based on the comment. Reassign to ftang.

More than a few users have said this about both Communicator and Mozilla/NS6.x. Correct font metrics for readability contributes greatly to usability, particularly for those who spend time on the Internet. This is one area where IE does a pretty good job in Japanese and (I suspect) also in Chinese.

The underline position should be taken care of by bug 76097. However, that patch make the line space problem even worse. We might need to do something for linespace as well. I will spend some time later on this.

Ftang - What's the TM for this one? Is it something we should try and get into a limbo build?

I will mark this one as dup of 76097. This is a high risk change with complicated implication. I am working actively on this issue now. We might not be able to get it to limbo list just because its risk. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 76097 ***
