Reftest and mochitest use JS to count assertions during execution. But that strategy can't work for assertions during shutdown (which might happen as a result of something a test did). I think the Python (automation.py, etc) should watch for "TEST-START | Shutdown" and consider subsequent NS_ASSERTIONs to be test failures.
