noting that sfoster points out that our default icon from the work in 879113 suffers from these issues as well when used as a thumbnail.
After playing with the CSS a bit, I don't think just changing the CSS is going to gain us much. I think we would have to do something smarter with how we collect the thumbnails like trying to cut out dead space on the left and saving them at a slightly larger size for cropping.
