Details

From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux 2.4.6 i686; en-US; rv:0.9.1) Gecko/20010620 BuildID: 20010620 Some pages tell the browser to open a new window for their links. Others don't. One example is clicking on a link in a mail message. The browser tends to load the page into an existing window: I WAS USING THAT! It's really annoying. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. View an email with a textual url that mozilla recognizes as a link. 2. Have at least one browser window open. 3. Click on the link Actual Results: The open browser window loaded the url I clicked on. The site I was viewing has switched. Expected Results: Open a new browser window. I tried to look for this bug, or maybe a 'reuse windows' option, but couldn't find either.

you're right! anyway you should change severity to enhancement
*** This is a duplicate of bug 28239 ***
How is it a duplicate? That one is about a double click ON a message, while I'm talking about click on a LINK INSIDE a message, which is only an example. Any link which opens a page in a browser window which isn't the current window shouldn't use an existing window to do this. That's the bug.
This isn't a dup of 28239, since that's talking about opening mail windows, not policy on how browser urls should be handled. Personally, I hate it when new windows open that I didn't ask for. You can always ask for a new window, by middle-clicking on the link (assuming you have a middle mouse button) or by right-clicking and selecting "Open in new window". I think there's yet another way, ctrl-leftclick or something like that. Please don't make popping up new windows mandatory.

ok therefore i just asked ;c)
probably it wouldn't be bad to integrate a new feature to change the open in new window behavior like being able to change if mozilla always opens such things in currently open windows or if mozilla is going to open a new one and leaving the old ones untouched. - changing severity from normal to enhancement - confirming bug
Severity: normal → enhancement
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
I agree with Akkana, I actually feel pretty stupid not knowing about the middle button thing. Personally, I'm set with that, and nothing else needs to be done. If you feel a permanent behavior setting should be made possible, that's up to you, of course.
