Build: 2001072303
Steps to reproduce:
1) Use modern skin
2) Click on a message in a newsgroup
3) Look at mark button
4) Notice two arrows - one that's intended to be there (the round one you're
meant to click on) and one that isn't and is actually part of the image.
Screenshot coming soon.

I see it too.
in addition to the mark button having an extra arrow, the file button has the
small black arrow, but not the fancy "rounded" arrow that print, mark, and get
msg have.
I'll log a new bug on that.
marlon, would this be a bug for you, or hewitt?

file button spun off to #92115

the file and mark buttons are supposed to have the little black arrow, because
they are flyout menus. not supposed to have the separate round button, which is
for combo buttons.
Comment 7•24 years ago

based on marlon's comment, #92115 would be invalid, right?
for this bug, for the mark button, we should be removing the fancy rounded button?
can you help I guess I don't understand the difference yet on when to use the
black arrow and when to use the fancy button. is that convered in the spec some
where?

sorry i should have explained more clearly. The file and mark buttons do only
one thing - they flyout menus. so everytime you click this button you get a menu
- so the arrow is more closely associated with the icon as one unified button to
indicate you will get a menu. However, the get msg and print buttons are not the
same, they are combo buttons. Which means they are actually two distinct
clickable buttons in one. If you click the icon portion, it immediately gets
your messages; however, if you click the arrow button, you get the flyout menu.
The main difference lies in the fact that the combo button is actually TWO
BUTTONS, two distinct features occupying one common area. Where as the former,
file and mark buttons, are only single buttons, with no additional region to
click.
This design is actually the result of some inconsistency between the platforms
prescedence. One the mac, you don't have the concept of combo buttons (well not
really), on the PC you do. 4.x was like the Mac, we used to accomplish it by
using the "click-and-hold flyouts", which IMO is the best and cleanest way to do
it. However, our engineers have not been able to get the click-and-hold
functionality to work reasonably well, so we are stuck with these weird looking
conglomerate features, which are: a) difficult to hit due to their small size and
close proximity to the main button. b) stupid looking.

re-assign to marlon.
according to him, the black triangle in the icon is going away in the mark
button.

The mark button is a combo button.

marlon... The mark button has dual functions, clicking on the Mark button marks
the message, clicking on the rounded arrow opens up a menu. This works like the
Get Message and Print buttons therefore in my opinion the little black arrow
show be removed and the rounded arrow kept
