There's no feedback at all (not even an error on the console) if you fail to join a password protected IRC channel (mode: +k).
This includes both the cases of using no or a wrong password.

Suggestion: open a new tab for the conversation and display a password prompt instead of the conversation view.
It could maybe be one of these boxes with rounded corners and an icon in it. Firefox has a nice 'keys' icon that we could use.

In addition, the key is allowed to be made available to current channel members (see http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2811#section-4.2.10). In this case it should be available in the UI somewhere.

If the channel is not password protected and does not exist, there is feedback in the Error Console, but no other information for the user.

We now display a message (added in bug 955086 (bio 1657)): "Cannot join %S, invalid channel key." I agree that it would be nice to actually prompt for a password or something though. I'm closing this bug as a duplicate though as it DOES provide feedback.
