At the moment there is no way to send re-request authorization messages to buddies. There is a icon on the right corner in the conversation window that has icon and the text "account@example.com click to change" but at the moment this does absolutely nothing.
Protocol: XMPP/Jabber
Versions affected: 1.1, trunk

That icon is the "target selector" and doesn't have anything to do with authorizations. When you have two or more buddies merged as the same contact, you can use it to select the buddy (and hence the protocol) you are using to chat with. For example, if you have both a FB chat buddy and an AIM buddy for a friend, then you can merge them into the same contact in the contact list. After doing this, you can use the target selector to switch between FB and AIM while chatting.

Thanks for the information.
The original question or problem still remains, there is no way to do following actions either in the trunk or in the 1.1 version:
- Unsubscribe (or deauthorize) status updates
- Re-request authorization

On trunk for Google Talk you can just use the File -> Add Buddy dialog of the contact list, if you already have the contact in your list but you aren't subscribed to the presence updates, it will re-request authorization.

What do you mean by this, exactly? Why would you have a buddy but not want to know their current presence status?

This implies that this bug will be resolved automatically as soon as we use JS-XMPP for XMPP.

Works in JS-XMPP (now default) as per comment 5.
