We found an updated version of the hyphenation dictionary currently used for French. I can see it's different, but I can't tell whether it is better or not, so let's ask people that can :)
The dictionary is located at http://www.dicollecte.org/download/fr/hyph-fr-v3.0.zip
Maybe Olivier R. has information about the history here. Both seem to be derived from the same copy of hyph-fr.tex but there are obvious differences.
I can only say that the one we currently use is far from optimal, as we have experienced with the Australis theme testing. Hopefully the bigger, more recent one they have on Dicollecte is better. It looks like it is the one used by [Open|Libre]Office as well: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/dictionaries/tree/fr_FR
Nit: this one is LGPL 2.1-licensed so we would need to update the LICENCE file as well.

What version do you use ?
AFAIK, there is no better version than this one and there were only 4 versions of hyphenation files:
1.0 outdated, buggy.
2.0 used for several years by OpenOffice.org, OK most of the time.
3.0 used by LibreOffice since two years and it’s better than the previous version. It’s also the version I bundled in the French extension for LO/OO and within Grammalecte. This is the sole version in UTF-8.
Each one is an improvement of the previous version. I’m not the author of these files, I just use them.
Version 2.9 is the same than 3.0 in ISO8859-1, and AFAIK was never used. It exists only for old version of hyphen (the software who does the job).

Current version in Firefox is v2.12.
(From licence file: French hyphenation patterns (V2.12, 2002/12/11) )
Thanks Olivier for your explanation.

Unfortunately, even the v3.0 does not fix the Australis menu.
But since we have the confirmation it's a better version, let's improve the Web anyway :)

Not sure if I had to remove something in the LICENSE file or not, so basically I just added the license info included in v3.0, linked in c#0.

Jshin no longer works at Mozilla. All reviews requests to Jshin should have been redirected.
However, I have little knowledge about French hyphenation...

Hi,
I realistically won’t be able to work on this anytime soon, so I’m unassigning myself
