Some X fonts do not have all the chars indicated by their Registry-Encoding. For example some JISX0201 fonts are missing the ascii range, bug 81528, so we do not use the font at all. Since there are often very few JISX0201 font available this severely limits the available fonts Mozilla can use. If we could determine which glyphs are available we could use those. I could render the font off screen, down load the pixels, and them test for foreground pixels.
Bug 96768 proposes to make a font catalog to store the result in.
