This may be a platform issue, not a tech evangelism issue. Clicking on a normal link in the app when network is turned off shows a nice OS-level error screen saying that network is disabled. I suspect the issue is that the same should be done for XMLHttpRequests issued by an app while network is turned off. I will research further.
