Installed applications on Firefox OS have this capability already via the SimplePush API. https://wiki.mozilla.org/WebAPI/SimplePush‎ It seems that web pages will soon be getting this capability (issue 857464). Any addon that supports instant messaging or any kind of data synchronization could benefit from this capability as well.
