User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9_2) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/33.0.1750.152 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
It would be fantastic for Firefox addons to be able to receive push notifications for their users without having to maintain persistent connections to their respective servers.
Installed applications on Firefox OS have this capability already via the SimplePush API.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/WebAPI/SimplePush
It seems that web pages will soon be getting this capability (issue 857464).
Any addon that supports instant messaging or any kind of data synchronization could benefit from this capability as well. Pushbullet is one example of such an addon:

I’m sure there are many.
Expected results:
Note that Google Chrome exposes this capability to extensions via its chrome.pushMessaging API.
