this kind of goes hand in hand with bug 90695 --in comm4.x, the last column in an ftp listing would list the file type. f'rzample, go thru some build dirs in the url above: .tar.gz files are listed as "Unix Tape Archive", .zip as "Zip Compressed Data", .txt as "Plain Text", .exe and .bin as "Binary Executable", and so forth...
Keywords: 4xp
right now moz/n6.x only displays "file" in the last column --not too useful. :)
I guess we could do extention->mime mappings. Is there any point, though? I know 4.x did it. We display file/directory, but my rewrite has us using icons instead.
in 4.x, they had both icons and the file types listed... do the icons in your rewrite somehow also display the type? just curious... in 4.x i think they only had five different icons: one for all binaries, one for text, one for all images, a blank one, and one for directories.
Depends on: 78148
No, I just use the directory/file ones for the moment. This is mainly because of the intermediate index format valeski wanted me to keep - theres no room for the extra info.

I can't see the point of this. There is an experimental ftp rfc which would allow us to get the mime type from the directory listing, but I can't find any server which follows this RFC. -> future unless someone can give me a use case. 4.x just guessed, didn't it?

How I see it is that when you actually request the file then Mozilla guesses a file type e.g. Mozilla guesses that ftp://[deleted]/Image002.gif is actually image/gif. So it looks as if it should be possible to choose the icon based on the guessed MIME type (image/gif -> internal-gopher-image in this case).
nsMIMEService::GetTypeFromURI might do the trick.
