This is the sort of approach I'm thinking of taking for filtering console messages, by tagging each ConsoleAPI instance with a consoleID. Does this make sense or is there something else that you'd prefer here Mihai?

I intended innerID to be used for identifying addons/extensions, etc. Currently we put the filename out of lack of anything better, and we do not use it anywhere. The consoleID seems like a good innerID candidate. Thoughts? - How does consoleID work with the DOM console API from pages/widgets of addons? How about nsIScriptErrors and network requests?

Script errors can be done the same. network requests I haven't thought about so much yet.

Overriding is a bit ugly, but I dont know of a better solution now. Also see bug 988636 - Console.jsm will be unified with the DOM console API implementation, hopefully soon.

Hrm, I'd better hurry up and land this first then! ;) So thinking more I think it makes sense to keep innerID and consoleID separate. I think of innerID as being the place where the logging is happening and consoleID the thing doing the logging (maybe it should be consoleOwner?). As an example for SDK page-mods we kind of want any logging they do to show up in the webconsole for the page they are attached too, but we also want them to show up in the add-on debugger. So it would make sense for them to log with an innerID for the page and consoleID for the add-on.

Here is an updated and somewhat larger patch. It gives every restartless add-on a custom console that reports through the debug protocol. It also gives the browser actor a global for every restartless add-on that it can use for JS evaluation. The method it uses is a little hacky for my tastes. I don't want to expose a way to get the global from the add-on manager so instead I have it listen for new connections and then pass the global to the actor. This also means that if an add-ons global changes (doesn't happen right now) it can pass the new one along too. I'd love to hear feedback on how nasty you think this is. Assuming this looks ok on general principal I'll clean it up, maybe add some more tests and then go for review. I know this doesn't support some types of console messages or some SDK cases but I'd rather get the first steps in this patch landed and then iterate on it than try to do everything in one go.

It's unfortunate for sure, but I think it makes sense to hold the add-on manager to a higher standard than the debugger server, if we can't keep them both to the same standard. However I believe there are a few things that we could do to make the interface between the two more future-proof. One is to keep the loop over add-on actors to the debugger server and expose it with a DebuggerServer.updateAddonActors(fn) (or mapAddonActors) that applies the fn callback to every add-on actor in all current connections. fn would then receive an add-on actor as a parameter so that XPIProvider.jsm could plant the add-on global. It might even make sense to use DevToolsUtils.yieldingEach, although I expect multiple debugger connections and lots of add-on actors to be a very rare case. The other is the notification mechanism to use for alerting the add-on manager to a new connection. Notification observers aren't available in workers AFAIK so Eddy would have to skip that call in workers. But AFAICT it is just an extra notification to overcome the single-callback limitation of onConnectionChange, which was introduced in bug 912898 as a temporary measure for B2G. Even though we could just chain callbacks (every new listener would keep a reference to the previous callback and call it before returning), I think using an event emitter as I had suggested in that bug would make the most sense. And since only the new connection's add-on actors are of interest to the add-on manager in this case, we should have both DebuggerServer.updateAddonActors and DebuggerServerConnection.updateAddonActors, with the former looping over all connections and calling the latter.

I like this but I realised that doing this would allow the same pretty direct exposure of add-on globals to anyone that called that. Instead I've made a setAddonOptions method which passes a set of options through to the actors for an add-on and let's them take it. Other code can still ultimately get it if they go through the actors manually but at least it is obscure enough that AMO reviewers will spot it and deny review, also we could lock that down tighter later if it became a problem. There is one problem. It turns out that with bug 910184 there are multiple debugger servers so registering on the main server for events doesn't get them from the actual server in use in the add-on debugger. My first guess approach here is to register a hierarchy of servers and have messages emitted passed up to parents and calls to setAddonOptions passed on to children. Before I go ahead and try to figure out how to test this bit I wanted to grab your thoughts on that?

Since you are only interested in the browser debugger, wouldn't interacting with it directly work? You should be able to get a reference to it via BrowserToolboxProcess.debuggerServer and just listen for connection events on that one.

Actually, since BrowserToolboxProcess.debuggerServer won't be available until BrowserToolboxProcess is initialized, we could have a BrowserToolboxProcess.addConnectionListener that would maintain a listener list until initialization and then pass it on to BrowserToolboxProcess.debuggerServer.

The former is obviously useful, but the reasoning for the latter is this: say that a client is debugging an add-on, which gets uninstalled. Uninstalling the add-on will trigger an addonListChanged notification, which the client should follow up with a new listAddons request. But between the time the add-on is uninstalled and the listAddons response is received, the client may still make more requests to the actor of the uninstalled add-on. This pattern ensures that the client will not have server actors unexpectedly disappearing from it.

Ok I didn't see the need to keep the actors alive after the add-on had gone away. But I think bug 992244 has introduced a bug with the tab and addon lists. In both cases multiple calls to getList will return the same actor if the tab/add-on hasn't changed. But they create a new pool for each call and destroy the previous one calling disconnect on all the previously returned actors, even though we are sending the same actors this time. I think just but not cleaning up the old actors this is fixed and I can do that here.

This adds the console actor for add-ons and tests that they work. It also adds a console to the bootstrap scope for every add-on (Blair, please review that part). Because the add-on manager only passes add-on globals to the BrowserAddonActors used by toolbox processes and the test doesn't use that we have to test logging with objects which makeDebuggeeValue can get a global for.
