User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i586; en-US; rv:0.9.5) Gecko/20011012
BuildID: 2001101201
When I visit the webpage http://www.redhat.com/WebX and click the "newsgoups"
link, I expect Mozilla to add a new server, news.redhat.com, to my list of news
servers, not place it as a child of the last news server in the list.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Have an existing news server.
2.Go to the web page http://www.redhat.com/WebX
3.Click the "newsgroups" link.
Actual Results: Instead of a new news server being added to the tree, it is
created as a child of the last news server in the tree, as though it were a
group under that server.
Expected Results: Expected another news server to be added to the tree.
Adding the lokigames news server works fine, apparently because it specifies the
news server and a group. See http://www.lokigames.com/support/ and click one of
the groups.

I'm marking this bug as NEW.
Even though this bug is old, I can still reproduce it with a trunk build form
2002032018.

- I can't find a news link on the RedHat site
- news.lokigames.com does not resolve by DNS
Here are a few news URIs which I think are well-formed, but some of them relate to other bugs, e.g. bug 64142, bug 327885

Still (more or less) REPRODUCIBLE with English SeaMonkey 2.45a1 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:48.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/48.0 Build 20160308001946 (Default Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit
a) I tried <https://www.seamonkey.at/newsgroups.html>, where NG-Links do not work at all. But different to original report no NG is added to the last NG server, SM simply does nothing after click on link. I am not 100% sure whether this really the same as the reported issue.
b) <http://www.lokigames.com/support/> NG links seem to work, I will have to do
some more tests.
c) I edited a copy of seamonkey.at/newsgroups.htmlm modified first NG link
<news:de.comm.software.mozilla.browser> to
<news://news.aioe.org/de.comm.software.mozilla.browser>, what will work fine and
add NG to news.aioe.org account or show existing subscribed account there.
c1) but using such kind of links seems rather useless to me, why should we
constrain users to view NG on a particular server?
d) Already REPRODUCIBLE SeaMonkey 2.8 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64;
rv:11.0) Gecko/20120604 Firefox/11.0
e) That still worked fine with DE SeaMonkey 2.5 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64;
rv:8.0.1) Gecko/20111121 Firefox/8.0.1 Build 20111121045514
(Default Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit
f) I wonder whether "Bug 327885 - News:// URIs without default server fail
to invoke Account Wizard"
OS: Linux → All
Summary: Newsgroup added via weblink goes in wrong position → Newsgroup link without server in it will not show (or add) NG
Version: Trunk → SeaMonkey 2.8 Branch
