Cheng talked with Marshall and Geoff and the consensus is that we're going to make the following changes: 1. the remote-troubleshooting checkbox will be on by default for everyone 2. we're going to change the text for the remote-troubleshooting thing to: Check here to provide technical information about your browser. This information helps us better understand our users and create better products. This information will be kept in accordance with our Privacy policy. 3. we're going to change the text for the submit button to just "Submit" This bug covers those changes. Further, it needs to be done ASAP so it can be live for Monday.
Grabbing this to do tonight.

In a PR: https://github.com/mozilla/fjord/pull/444 I asked if someone could review it over the weekend. If no one does, then I'll self-r+ it and push it Monday morning first thing. I need enough time before release day to make sure it's ok.
Laura reviewed it (yay!). Landed in https://github.com/mozilla/fjord/commit/ae8585965bcd84a8bf2d2ae76caaacc24f68a8c4 I pushed it out and manually tested it: 1. submit feedback leaving checkbox as default: browser data submitted and captured 2. submit feedback unchecking checkbox: browser data NOT submitted 3. submit feedback unchecking and then rechecking checkbox: browser data submitted and captured Looks good. We'll clean up the goofy stuff in bug #1119813. Marking as FIXED.

(In reply to Will Kahn-Greene [:willkg] from comment #0) > Cheng talked with Marshall and Geoff and the consensus is that we're going > to make the following changes: > > 1. the remote-troubleshooting checkbox will be on by default for everyone > Presumably there is a separate bug for turning on the checkbox for everyone. As I understand that is what is happening here for all Release channel users. I turn it on anyway, but presumably the potential privacy concerns of flipping this for everyone will have been addressed.
This was the bug for changing the default. It's item 1 in the description.
Thanks for the clarification & confirmation. It just struck me as something we may not do without advising users in advance as it could be a privacy concern.
What privacy concern exactly? The remote-troubleshooting data is substantially less than we collect in crash reports or in FHR data and will be treated with the same level of care. It's not even close to identifiable and in spite of that, will only be available to employees with a demonstrated need to use the data (for fixing bugs). We've checked with the Privacy team (Marshall, Geoff, named above) and they agreed to the above language. As for "advising users in advance" that's what the language on the page does. The Submit button + checked checkbox is an explicit opt-in to submitting that data. Users aren't going to have the data scraped from their browsers if they don't submit feedback, simply by visiting the page.
