User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:40.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/40.0
Build ID: 20150512004026

Steps to reproduce:

Browse to one of the following using Firefox 40.0a2:
http://members.dhs.org/nic/hosts/
http://dolske.net/mozilla/tests/httpauth/realmX

Actual results:

Straight to 401 Authorization Required without a chance to enter username and password.

Expected results:

A dialog box requesting username and password should have been displayed.
I'm not seeing FDE 40 available for download or update yet. Both FDE 39 and Nightly 41 worked fine though. Please test in a brand new profile.

Hi gingerbread man! I should have mentioned that I got it from the FTP.

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-aurora/

firefox-40.0a2.en-US.win64.installer.exe
OS: Unspecified → Windows 8.1
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
Brand new profile doesn't seem to have helped
Is e10s enabled by default during your tests?

Loic got it!

Disabling multi-process (and then restarting) resolved the issue. I now get the basic authentication pop up.

Please feel free to resolve this as a duplicate if there's already a bug out there for basic auth + e10s not working.

As a side note, that seems to have fixed drag from windows explorer / drop on dropbox.com too!
Summary: Basic Authentication completely broken in Dev / Aurora 40.0a2 → Basic Authentication broken e10s
Blocks: e10s
There is the same bug with FTP, maybe a dupe, see bug 1144631.
Scott are you running any addons when this happens? If so, please disable them and try again.

I'm now on the 5/14 nightly of the dev edition.

Turned e10s back on, restarted. All tabs crashed, restore single and restore multi didn't work.

Help > Restart with addons disabled, accepted "Safe Mode" during restart. (I had tried safe mode originally before submitting the bug too, but it crashed and when it restarted it must not have been in safe mode.)

The two links from my original post now give log on boxes!

Enabled my addons one by one until I found the culprit. Seems to be FoxyProxy. However, it works fine with e10s disabled.

After searching arewee10syet.com, I found this bug 1106486 from back in November, so I guess it's a known issue.

How did a brand new profile not help if an add-on was to blame?
