Details

When you mouseover the icon to the left of the URL on the URL bar, what shows as a tooltip isn't relevant to that; rather, it just repeats the text of whatever tooltip you last saw. For instance, if you go from the "Stop" button to the URL bar icon, "Stop loading this page" shows as the tooltip for the URL bar icon too. (It's also placed in an excessively wide box, but that's already covered in bug 116258.)
I can see this using a Mozilla CVS build on Linux Confirming

changing summary to reflect general case - if there is no tooltiptext to display, the tooltip should never appear
Keywords: nsbeta1+
Summary: URL bar icon tool tip text is taken from last thing you moused over, not anything relevant → tooltips with no text shouldn't appear
I fixed the bug originally reported here. This bug occurs in rare conditions, I doubt it manifests itself elsewhere in the product currently. Why nsbeta1+? Resetting for reevaluation.

Verifying. This was fixed in bug 87949.

Reopening. There are actually more cases than I thought, for example, hover over a menuitem in any dual menubutton dropdown (e.g. back/forward's). A fix for this would not fix the root problem, but would prevent those from appearing.

Yes, I see this now. Shouldn't be that tought to fix, I wouldn't think.
nsbeta1- per ADT triage team

This is effecting Mozilla Thunderbird 0.1 as well. When no tooltip text exists for an item, it reuses the previous text. Example: In the compose window (html editing enabled): Hover over the Spell button until tooltip appears Now open the Smiley Faces drop down Hover over any of the items in the list The Spell tooltip text appears: "Check spelling of selection or entire page". Now, this might have been overlooked because if you hover over the Smiley Faces button before triggering the drop down list, the items use the "Insert a smiley face" text. The list items on the "Insert a Link, Anchor, Image, Horizontal Line, or Table" have this same problem. Just another trivial cosmetic bug...
Could someone with appropriate permissions adjust Component (it's no longer Location Bar bug) and Target Milestone? Also, bug 209314 depends on this.
